TOKYO (Reuters) - The number of deaths in Japan is expected to exceed births in 2005 for the first time in more than a century, government data showed on Thursday, foreshadowing a population decline that could jeopardise the long-term health of the economy.
While other factors need to be taken into account, such as the movement of people to and from other countries, Japanese media said the data pointed to a shrinking in the overall population.
