JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Regina Brookes, a demure and elderly white woman honoured by Nelson Mandela on Friday, struggled to recount her ordeal after having a child with a black man during South Africa's apartheid era.
Brookes was charged in a Johannesburg court in 1954 under the apartheid Immorality Act and given an 18 month prison sentence for loving black police sergeant Richard Khumalo.
