WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Claims against the federal flood insurance program for damage related to hurricanes Katrina and Rita could exceed $22 billion, the emergency management official that oversees the coverage said on Tuesday.
David Maurstad, the acting director of the Federal Flood Insurance Program, also said in prepared testimony before the Senate Banking Committee that claims would be the highest ever and that an additional $5 billion in borrowing authority would be needed for now.
