Saddam is due to face trial on Oct. 19 on charges of crimes against humanity, and could face the death sentence after surviving numerous attempts by his foes to kill him.
Ousted by U.S.-led forces in April 2003, Saddam was captured in December the same year by American soldiers who found him hiding in a hole near his hometown of Tikrit.
