GULFPORT, Miss. (Reuters) - Bulldozers could soon clear away thousands of homesites in Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, in many cases without the homeowners' permission, federal and local officials said on Friday.
Public streets have largely been cleared in the nearly three weeks since the storm ravaged the Gulf Coast, but the remnants of neighborhoods and businesses remain as mountainous piles of debris. Miles of shoreline homes have been reduced to twisted piles of splintered walls, broken boats and cars and uprooted trees.
