WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Chief Justice William Rehnquist, who died on Saturday after a battle with thyroid cancer, carved out a record as one of the most conservative jurists in U.S. history during more than 33 years on the Supreme Court.
As a justice for nearly 15 years and then as chief justice for more than 18 years, Rehnquist helped push the highest U.S. court to the right. He has been treated for thyroid cancer since October and died at the age of 80.
