Murdoch, 74, previously held the title of publisher for 10 years until 1986 and retakes the position as the tabloid newspaper's circulation is rising, hitting about 678,000 copies a day by the end of March.

The rising circulation -- a rarity in the current U.S. newspaper business -- has heated up the longtime rivalry with cross-town paper The Daily News and created an intense battle for readership.
