HONG KONG (Reuters) - A mysterious disease that has killed 19 people in southwest China and left 61 ill is related to a bacteria that spreads among pigs, the Hong Kong Health Department said.
Initial lab tests in mainland China suggest that the affected people were suffering from streptococcus suis infections related to the slaughtering or handling of infected pigs, the department said in a statement late on Monday after receiving an update from Chinese authorities.
