CANBERRA (Reuters) - Australian Prime Minister John Howard toned down tough immigration detention laws on Friday to allow children and families to be released from custody while their refugee claims are being considered.
Howard said the changes, which head off a revolt within the conservative government over immigration laws, would not undermine his policy of mandatory detention for illegal immigrants and visa over-stayers.
