SYDNEY (Reuters) - Prime Minister John Howard has signalled that he will soften Australia's mandatory immigration detention policy, as refugee advocates allege authorities allowed Beijing officials to "interrogate" almost 50 Chinese detainees.
Smuggled letters have revealed that asylum seekers were among those interviewed and that they feared persecution as a result of the information they gave in the interviews, Refugee Action Coalition spokesman Ian Rintoul told local radio on Wednesday.
