University Malaya, which hosted the Carnival Theatre (Karviter) competition, said the skit violated the competition’s rules and regulations.
“The results of the investigation found that the scenes shown were not in line with the original script that had gone through the screening process and were clearly a violation of the competition's established conditions,” it said in a statement on Thursday (April 16).
The university said that, based on the general terms and conditions and regulations of the competition, each performance must be free of negative elements, provocations, or any content that may affect religious, moral, ethical, or cultural values and the university’s reputation.
“UM hereby apologises for the error that occurred and any inconvenience caused. The university does not tolerate any violation of the program guidelines or regulations.
“The performance in question has been deemed ineligible for evaluation, and follow-up actions are being implemented to strengthen monitoring and ensure that such matters do not occur again in the future,” it said.
