QuickCheck: Is TikTok being asked to shut down in Malaysia?

A VIRAL social media post says that TikTok is being shut down in Malaysia.

The post also claims that a Cabinet minister had announced the closure.

Is this really happening as claimed?

VERDICT:

FALSE

In a statement on Tuesday (Dec 30), the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said it was investigating the viral post, which also used the logo and visual identity of a TV station.

It said preliminary investigations found that the content had been altered and was fake, and that such a statement was never issued by the minister.

"The TV station has also lodged a police report and denied that the post was published on any of its news platforms," it added.

The statement also said that an individual had been called in to give their statement at the Kerian district police headquarters in Perak.

A mobile phone and SIM card were seized for digital forensic analysis, it added.

The MCMC reminded the public that under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, the dissemination of false content can be punished with a fine of up to RM500,000, two years’ imprisonment, or both.

"Always verify the authenticity of information before posting, sharing, or commenting on social media.

"The spread of false content and misuse of identity not only misleads the public but can also lead to legal action," it added.
