QuickCheck: Was a KLIA bomb hoax just a student's prank?

A BOMB scare was triggered at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on Tuesday (Dec 2), causing a flight to be delayed.

Emergency protocols were triggered at 5.32pm, just before the flight was scheduled to leave, and a suspect was arrested.

The flight eventually took off at 7.19pm after a thorough security sweep.

However, it was said later that the entire incident stemmed from a prank by a student.

Is this true?

VERDICT:

TRUE

It was reported on Thursday (Dec 4) that there was no criminal element in the incident.

Police said the suspect, a university student, had written on a luggage tag that there was a bomb in his suitcase.

According to a statement by KLIA OCPD Asst Comm Azman Shariat, the man did so as he did not want his friends to tamper with his luggage.

ACP Azman added that the suspect was currently out on bail, while an investigation paper had been forwarded to prosecutors for further instructions.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad, which operates KLIA, reminded the public that making false threats was a serious offence under the law.
