QuickCheck: Are fake posters of Sabah BN candidates being shared online?

THE Election Commission (EC) had just announced that the polling date in the Sabah state election is set for Nov 29.

In the Oct 16 announcement, the commission also stated that the nomination day is set for Nov 15.

However, posters of what seem to be Sabah BN candidates have been shared online as early as Oct 14.

Are these posters official and legitimate?

VERDICT:

FALSE

Datuk Suhaimi Nasir, the information chief of Sabah Umno, confirmed that viral posters of candidates falsely claiming to represent Sabah Barisan Nasional in the upcoming 17th State Election are fake.

“We wish to firmly state that all these posters are fake and have no connection whatsoever with Barisan.

“Such attempts are clearly the work of certain quarters who aim to confuse the public, divide Barisan’s election machinery, and weaken our momentum. They know Barisan possesses a strong, disciplined, and well-organised election team, with credible candidates and a very high potential for victory,” he said in a statement Thursday (Oct 16).

He added that Sabah Barisan was prepared with a line-up consisting of 80% new faces and was confident of achieving an outstanding victory in the coming state election.

“These distractions are nothing new. We are not only prepared, we are stronger than ever. Barisan will not be shaken by fake propaganda. Our focus remains on our work, our candidates, and the people,” Suhaimi said.

We urge the people of Sabah not to be misled by fake news or recycled posters, and to continue supporting Barisan, the only coalition with proven leadership, stability and a track record of real development,” he said.
