QuickCheck: Is footage of two dangerously driven buses genuine?

THE tragic bus accident that claimed the lives of 15 students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Gerik on Monday (June 9) heightened public awareness of the importance of road safety, especially concerning buses.

As if on cue, two videos went viral recently, showing two different buses being driven dangerously: one on an East Coast road and the other on the North-South Expressway.

The timing of the videos seems suspicious as they surfaced so soon after the tragic incident.

Are the videos real?

Verdict:

TRUE

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) confirmed in a statement that they had received reports regarding the two buses.

The JPJ said it had investigated the matter and had issued summons notices to the bus companies that own the buses.

“The department will not compromise with any vehicle that violates the regulations, and will take strict action against individuals or parties involved.

“Companies are also advised to monitor the driving ethics of their respective drivers to ensure compliance with the regulations,” said JPJ in the statement.

The department also thanked those who have reported complaints regarding road safety to them.

It also urged the public to continue reporting complaints about traffic offences either directly or in real time using the MyJPJ Application: e-Aduan@JPJ or email aduantrafik@jpj.gov.my.
