IN the waters off Sabah, dangerous reptiles are known to make unexpected appearances.

Was a crocodile really captured near Semporna as claimed online?

VERDICT:

TRUE

A crocodile that had evaded capture in waters off Bohey Dulang Island, Semporna, for two days has finally been caught.

Islanders and resort workers in the area noticed the reptile on Wednesday (June 11) morning, near Pulau Sibangkat.

The workers closed in on the reptile and used nets to trap it before bringing it on their boat to be handed over to wildlife officials.

It is unclear if there are any more crocodiles in the area, but it is learnt that parks and wildlife officials are continuing to monitor the situation.

Sightings of the reptile were first reported around the area on Monday (June 9), and this had forced Sabah Parks to temporarily close down the island to facilitate crocodile risk mitigation operations.

"The closure to the public from Tuesday (June 10) to Friday (June 13), is necessary to ensure smooth operations and public safety during the period," said Sabah Parks.

"Operations will only resume once officials are certain it is safe to do so," said a Sabah Parks officer.
