QuickCheck: Did a car crash into a vacant Melaka shop?

SOMETIMES, even the most routine outings can end in sudden shocks.

It was claimed online that an accident happened in Taman Melaka Raya, when a car went straight into an empty shoplot.

Did this mishap really happen as claimed?

VERDICT:

TRUE

A car crashed into an empty shop lot in Taman Melaka Raya after an elderly driver forgot to shift the transmission into reverse.

The 69-year-old housewife intended to reverse into a parking bay in front of the shop at about 8am on Tuesday (June 3) but mistakenly put the gear into drive instead.

Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Christopher Patit said initial investigations revealed the driver failed to shift the gear to "R" before attempting to park and pressed the accelerator.

"As a result, the car moved forward and crashed into the shop, causing damage to both the vehicle and the premises," he said.

ACP Christopher added that the driver was unharmed and lodged a police report at 9am the same day.

He said the driver had gone to Melaka Raya from her home in Semabok to have breakfast at a restaurant before the incident occurred.

ACP Christopher added that the shop lot has been vacant since late last year.
