QuickCheck: Are bogus emails being sent impersonating senior law enforcement figures?

IN THE current digital age, misinformation spreads quickly, making it difficult to distinguish between truth and deception.

Recently, talk has been circulating about a bogus email purportedly from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) warning recipients to reply or face legal action.

Is it true that a bogus email is being sent out misusing the name of the IGP?

VERDICT:

TRUE

The police have warned the public to beware of a bogus email using the IGP's name.

Acting Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Comm Datuk Muhammad Hasbullah Ali said the email instructed the recipient to reply or face legal action.

"The content of the email makes it seem like it was from the IGP but the email was sent from the address 'bennett411williams@gmail.com'. It also contained a photo of the IGP," he said in a statement on Wednesday (April 30).

He also reminded the public that the email's content is fake.

"We urge those who received the email to lodge a police report as soon as possible," he added.
