QuickCheck: Is it true flamingos get their pink colour from eating shrimps?

Flamingos are famous for their vivid pink plumage.

FLAMINGOS are among the most fascinating birds in the world.

With six distinct species found in various parts of the globe, these elegant waders are more than just a treat for birders, they are prominent in the avian world.

What really captures our attention about flamingos is their reddish-pink plumage. But is it true that the fabulous colour comes from eating shrimp?

Verdict:

TRUE

Yes! However, there’s science behind it. Flamingos feast on brine shrimp and algae, both of which are rich in carotenoids.

These natural pigments are also found in carrots and tomatoes.

These compounds don’t just colour your salad, they are also the secret behind flamingos’ striking feathers.

And without these pigments, flamingos would actually be white or gray.

Once digested, the pigments are absorbed by the flamingos' bodies, gradually turning their feathers that popular shade of pink.
