QuickCheck: Are scammers posing as JPJ to send malicious links via SMS?

Every day, we are bombarded with random messages from all directions and sources – WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook Messenger, etc. Even the barely used SMS. So it is important that we exercise caution when we receive such messages, especially from unknown persons.

Are scammers posing as the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to send malicious links via SMS?

VERDICT:

TRUE

According to Sinar Harian, JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said that they had received complaints about such messages being sent to try and dupe unsuspecting victims.

He said that the message, which claims that the receiver's driving licence was being deactivated and contained a URL, was a phishing scam.

"JPJ has never sent out such messages," he said in a statement on Tuesday (March 4).

He urged the public to be wary of such messages and not click on links to unknown websites.

"Only refer to information on official channels like our website and social media platforms," he said.

He added that any complaints can be lodged at jpj.spab.gov.my.
