QuickCheck: Is a tiger terrorising farmers in Perak?

REPORTS have emerged of a tiger allegedly attacking livestock in Ulu Kinta, Perak, sparking concerns among residents in the area.

Is there any truth to claims of this feline predator in the area?

Verdict:

TRUE

The Perak Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) says it is actively tracking down a tiger that attacked livestock near Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Choh, Ulu Kinta, on Dec 26.

Its director, Yusoff Shariff, confirmed that an adult tiger has been spotted near some traps set up, with footprints indicating its presence.

"Monitoring will continue, and Perhilitan will maintain the trap locations in the area," he told Bernama.

He also said the wild boar population had declined due to African Swine Fever, which is believed to be the primary reason for the tiger's presence in residential areas.

He also advised people in the area to be cautious and avoid going out alone, especially at night.

"If you encounter or spot the tiger, do not take any risky action. Instead, report the incident to us," he said. - Bernama
