IN TODAY'S digital age, viral videos often leave us questioning their authenticity.
Recently, social media went abuzz with a 53-second clip showing an individual holding a firearm while apprehending a suspect, claiming to be a police officer.
Could it really be true that this individual is indeed a police officer?
Verdict:
TRUE
The individual who claimed to be a police officer holding a firearm while apprehending a suspect has been confirmed as a police officer, said Assistant Commissioner Razlam Ab Hamid.
The George Town OCPD said the police officer is with the state police headquarters Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
"He is one of us and he was apprehending a suspect believed to be involved in obstructing and using criminal force against a public servant," he said in a statement on Friday, Aug 2.
ACP Razlam said the incident came to light following a 53-second video that was detected by police on Aug 1.
He said investigation found that the incident happened on July 31 at Relau at about 5.45pm.
In the video, the suspect acted aggressively and tried to escape although the police officer had instructed him to surrender.
The suspect also shouted he was innocent and almost hit the officer, however, he was detained.
ACP Razlam said a check on the suspect found a plastic package containing heroin weighing about 10.35g.
"Earlier before the incident, the suspect had injured a police officer while trying to evade arrest on July 30 at 8.20am," he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code, Section 353 of the Penal Code, and Section 39A(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
The suspect has been remanded for four days from Aug 1 to Aug 4, 2024, to assist with the investigation.
