QuickCheck: Is it true that civil servants are getting another salary hike?

IN AN era where misinformation can spread like wildfire, it’s easy to get excited over potential good news.

Recently, a WhatsApp message claimed that civil servants would receive a salary hike dated July 25, purportedly from the Finance Ministry.

Could this message about a pay rise for civil servants be true?

Verdict:

FALSE

According to a post by the Public Service Department (PSD), the message circulating on WhatsApp regarding a salary increase for civil servants is not true.

The PSD clarified that no new announcements had been made regarding salary adjustments for civil servants.

They then advised civil servants and the public to disregard the message and seek information from official sources to avoid confusion.

This recent viral message marks the second time this year that such misinformation about a pay rise has spread on social media.

Earlier this year, in April, a similar fake post went viral on social media, also falsely claiming a pay rise for civil servants.

For context, civil servants did actually receive a 13% salary hike in May 2024.
