GIVEN that shootings are rare in Malaysia, any news of one would go viral quickly regardless as to whether it is true or not.

This also applies to mishaps, such as a recent claim that a Customs officer accidentally shot himself while undergoing training at a Penang shooting range.

Is this true?

TRUE

Police have confirmed receiving a report regarding an incident involving an officer of the Penang Royal Malaysian Customs Department who shot himself while attending the department's shooting training here on Tuesday (June 11).

Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad when contacted by Bernama confirmed the report regarding the incident which happened at around 9am on Tuesday.

"The victim is reported to be receiving treatment at a hospital now. Further investigations are still underway," he said.

According to sources, the victim is currently receiving treatment at the Seberang Jaya Hospital (HSJ).
