QuickCheck: Was a ruckus involving teens on a Kota Kinabalu street gang-related?

KOTA KINABALU: A video went viral recently of some teenagers creating a ruckus on a busy street in front of the Kota Kinabalu market.

Speculation is that this involved rival gangs, but was the fight actually gang-related?

Verdict:

FALSE

Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm Kasim Muda said investigations revealed that the brawl was not gang-related but was sparked by a bullying and extortion incident.

"We received a report on a viral video of the fight at 7.56pm on May 17," he said in a statement on Thursday (May 23).

In the 32-second video, a group of children can be seen in front of the market while another group gathers at a nearby roundabout, They then start chasing each other, with no regard for passing vehicles.

They also throw objects at each other and use pipes and sticks as weapons.

ACP Kasim advised the public not to share the video or make statements that could cause unrest.

"Instead of taking to social media, it is better to lodge a report to us or other authorities," he said.
