QuickCheck: Was a coconut vendor brazenly robbed in Penang as seen in a viral video?


A VIDEO has gone viral on social media showing a coconut water vendor being robbed while plying his trade by the side of a road.

The caption of the video says the incident occurred in Taman Impian Alma, Bukit Mertajam, and that the suspects had pretended to be customers.

One of them snatched a gold necklace from the vendor before fleeing.

Is it true that a coconut vendor in Taman Impian Alma was robbed in broad daylight?

Central Seberang Perai OCPD Asst Comm Helmi Aris confirmed the incident.

"Initial investigations found that it took place at about 11am on Thursday (May 16)," he said in a statement on Friday (May 17).

ACP Helmi said the victim was selling coconut water by the roadside when three men on two motorcycles approached him.

He said one of the suspects pretended to buy coconut water before suddenly snatching the gold necklace the victim was wearing.

He said the suspects managed to escape on their motorcycles, despite the victim’s attempts to pursue them.

ACP Helmi said a check on the suspects' motorcycle registration numbers revealed that they were fake.

The case is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code, he added.

"Those with information or who witnessed the incident are urged to come forward to assist with the investigation," he said.

He said information can be channelled to investigating officer ASP Marsila Hamzah at 04-538 2222 or the nearest police station.
