QuickCheck: Was a fatal accident in Perak caused by a driver high on drugs?


Drunk driving can cause death and there are still such cases being reported nationwide due to reckless drivers.

However while accidents caused by drunk drivers are reported, there are also cases of drivers who are high on drugs causing accidents, sometimes with fatal consequences.

So was there such a fatal accident in Perak caused by a driver high on drugs?

A man high on drugs lost control of his car and rammed into six foreign workers walking by the side of the road to a nearby mosque, killing three of them.

Hilir Perak OCPD Asst Comm Ahmad Adnan Basri said the incident occurred at about 8.10pm on Wednesday (April 10) on KM16 of the Teluk Intan-Bidor Road.

He said the Pakistani men were walking from their house to a nearby mosque for Hari Raya Aidilfitri prayers when the incident happened.

The victims are aged between 20 and 36 years old. All of them had valid permits and travel documents.

"Two of them were killed at the scene. One died at the hospital, while the other three who sustained severe injuries were being treated at the hospital.

ACP Adnan said the 36-year-old driver, a local working as a food outlet helper has been arrested and a urine test confirmed that he was high on ganja.

"Initial investigations at the site found that the man had lost control of his car and skidded towards the left side of the road and ploughed into the six men," he said in a statement.

He said the case which has gone viral on social media will be investigated under Section 44(1) (a) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of drugs and causing death.

"Investigations are still being carried out to ascertain the real cause of the accident and the public with information can come forward to help by contacting the investigating officer Insp Amiruddin Shafei 013-9126959 or 05-6122222.
