QuickCheck: Did a garbage truck lead to a pile-up in Selangor?

IT TAKES a while for heavy vehicles like lorries and buses to come to a stop, hence the speed limits imposed on them.

It is also important for the brakes to be in tip-top condition so that their drivers can manoeuvre safely on crowded roads and highways.

Unfortunately, brake failures on such vehicles can lead to catastrophic consequences for other road users.

A video went viral on Tuesday (April 9) showing the aftermath of one such incident, with a garbage truck shown surrounded by damaged cars.

It was said that this happened in the afternoon at a traffic light intersection in Shah Alam. Is this true?

VERDICT:

TRUE

Bernama reports that 14 vehicles waiting at the Federal Highway/Shahpadu Highway traffic lights were damaged when a garbage truck with brake failure crashed into them at about 1.30pm on Tuesday.

The 41-year-old driver and the occupants of the cars were fortunately unhurt and subsequently lodged police reports.

North Klang OCPD Asst Comm Vijaya Rao said police were informed of the incident at 2.33pm.

He said the garbage truck was on its way from Shah Alam to Kapar.

"The lorry driver was ordered to undergo a urine test and was confirmed to be free of prohibited substances.

"The vehicle will be sent to Puspakom for further inspection and the case will be investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said in a statement.

Earlier, a video went viral on social media regarding the incident which caused congestion on the highway, especially from UiTM Shah Alam heading towards Klang.
