QuickCheck: Were fireworks set off in the middle of a Banting road?

FIREWORKS going off in an explosion of colours against the night sky are a common sight in Malaysia, especially during the many festive celebrations we enjoy.

Less common, however, is the sight of fireworks being set off in broad daylight, near a traffic light on a public-use road where plenty of drivers, motorists and pedestrians are present.

Is it true that such an event occurred in Banting, Kuala Langat recently?

VERDICT:

True

During the festive season, fans of the sparkly combustibles often try to set them off in large clearings, away from neighbourhood areas, so as to enjoy the pyrotechnic’s aesthetic without endangering themselves, others, or upsetting household pets.

However, this was not the case for one man, who was caught on camera in a viral video that showcased his disruptive behaviour on a busy street.

On Wednesday (March 27), police arrested a man believed to have set off fireworks at a traffic light junction near a supermarket in Pekan Banting, Selangor.

The suspect tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine, and was issued three fines for traffic-related violations.

According to a statement by Kuala Langat OCPD Supt Ahmad Ridhwan Mohd Nor @Saleh. The police are actively tracking two more persons suspected of involvement in the incident.

"The police have opened an investigation paper in accordance with Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957 which provides for seven years imprisonment or a fine of RM10,000 or both if convicted,” he added.
