QuickCheck: Did a man out for payback accidentally blow himself up in Kelantan?

Unsettled debt can lead to trouble, especially when it involves payment for services rendered.

People sometimes resort to extreme measures to exact what they feel is their due, even violence.

Recently, a man died after a homemade grenade exploded while he was allegedly trespassing in a nesting house used for gathering and harvesting edible bird's nests.

It was claimed that he intended to blow up the premises because he was not paid for construction work there.

Is this true?

Verdict:

TRUE

Kelantan police chief Comm Datuk Muhamad Zaki Harun said on Friday (Feb 9) they received a report at 8.25am of an explosion near the nesting house in Bukit Kuah, Kampung Pemberian Manek Urai in Kuala Krai.

"At the scene, we discovered a man lying with his stomach blown open.

"Initial investigation found that the victim was a man in his 60s who we believe entered the building by cutting through the fence behind it.

"The victim was holding an object, suspected to be a homemade grenade (we believe with intent) to blow the front door open, when the bomb suddenly exploded.

"The victim... died on the spot," he said in a statement on Saturday (Feb 10).

Comm Muhamad Zaki said the victim's body was taken to the forensic unit at Hospital Sultan Ismail Petra for an autopsy.

"From our investigation so far, we have found that the deceased was a former contractor who was hired by the owner of the building.

"We learned that there was a debt dispute where the owner had not settled wages owed to the deceased, which caused dissatisfaction," he said.

Comm Muhamad Zaki said they also found five more home-made explosives at the scene.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 447 of the Penal Code for trespassing and Section 8 of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.

He said the matter had been classified as a sudden death report but added that a thorough investigation would still be conducted.
