QuickCheck: Are loan sharks gaining access to people's phones through a new app?

WHEN it comes to illegal applications, it would be fair to think that the people behind such programmes are constantly trying to upgrade them to be more effective.

It has been claimed recently that loan sharks are using a new app to access the phones of people to get photographs, videos and other personal information to harass and intimidate borrowers or their acquaintances.

Is this true?

Verdict:

TRUE

In a post on its official Facebook page, the Home Ministry confirmed this with a graphic showing that the app is called "X-Credit" and shared several security tips for dealing with such software.

"Be careful when giving access permissions for all applications that have been downloaded, and change the passwords to all internet banking, e-wallet accounts and social media as a safety precaution," said the ministry.

It added that any apps that raise suspicion should be deleted and the phone restarted.

"If this is unsuccessful, reformat your phone," added the ministry.
