QuickCheck: Did a Terengganu man get a venomous snake surprise in his bedroom?

BEDROOMS are often a sanctuary from the world; as such, the sudden presence of something dangerous like a venomous snake would generally come as an unpleasant surprise.

It was claimed recently that a man in Hulu Terengganu found a 20kg king cobra in his bedroom. Is there any truth to this?

VERDICT:

TRUE

Hulu Terengganu District Civil Defence Force officer Mohd Zabri Abd Razak confirmed this, saying that a 4m (13ft) king cobra was captured when a Kampung Sungai Ular villager found the reptile in his bedroom on Tuesday (Dec 26).

Bernama quoted him as saying that a distress call came in at 7.10pm and a five-man team was sent to the location.

It took them 10 minutes to capture the snake, he added.

"The person first heard hissing sounds on top of his bedroom before he came upon the snake," said Mohd Zabri.

"It's normal for snakes to make hissing sounds as a warning when they feel threatened. King cobras are very poisonous. If bitten, victims could die in just five minutes,” he added when contacted on Wednesday (Dec 27).

Mohd Zabri said the snake will be kept temporarily at the Civil Defence Force district office before it is either released back into its natural habitat far from populated areas or handed over to the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan).
