QuickCheck: Have scammers set up fake social media accounts for a deputy minister?

IDENTITY theft has plagued the Internet almost as soon as people could set up accounts for anything and is still a serious problem. Even more so if the victim is a deputy minister.

Is it true that scammers have used the photos of a deputy minister to set up fake social media accounts?

Datuk Chan Foong Hin has advised the public to be wary of a fake social media account which apparently was using his photo in its profile.

The Plantation and Commodity Deputy Minister posted the advice on his Facebook page on Wednesday (Dec 20) after detecting the fake account which was also on the same platform.

The social media account that has his photo is using the name "Charlie Feng".

"I’m Chan, not Charlie. Please be cautious with any suspicious social media accounts, scammers could be anywhere. Please help to report this fake account," said the Kota Kinabalu MP.
