QuickCheck: Is the Sabah National Security Council issuing documents linked to census certificates?

WHENEVER information about official announcements appears on social media, people often believe that it is genuine - especially if it sounds legitimate and promises certain benefits or perks.

However, it is also possible that scammers can create rumours and profit off them by claiming that they can get government documents for a price.

Recently, a rumour went viral on social media that the Sabah National Security Council (NSC) was issuing documents linked to census certificates, which are documents that were issued by a federal task force between 1991 and 1993.

Is there any truth to this rumour?

Verdict:

FALSE

In a statement on its official Facebook page, the council said that no documents were being issued linked to census certificates as claimed online.

“The Sabah NSC also states that it has not appointed any agents or representatives to receive payments for the release of any documents,” said the council.

It added that it is regrettable that the situation has been manipulated by irresponsible parties, and urged the public to not be easily fooled.

“The public is advised to check any information beforehand and to refrain from sharing false news,” it added.
