QuickCheck: Was a snatch-thief caught on camera stealing a handphone from a car in traffic?


A SEVEN-second video of a motorcyclist snatching a handphone from a car at a traffic light has gone viral on TikTok.

Is this true?

According to a statement by Wangsa Maju OCPD Supt Ashari Abu Samah, the incident happened at Jalan Genting Klang, Setapak in Kuala Lumpur on

Saturday (Nov 5).

"The victim was sitting in the front passenger seat with the window open while their car was waiting at a traffic light on Jalan Genting Klang," said Supt Ashari.

"According to the report we received, it was then that a man on a motorcycle stopped beside the car and reached in to grab the victim's handphone before speeding off."

Supt Ashari then went on to say that police identified a 32-year-old man as their main suspect on Tuesday (Nov 8) and then proceeded to arrest him at 11.30pm on the same day. A handphone was also confiscated during the arrest.

"The suspect has been remanded for seven days starting from Nov 8 to aid with our investigation," said Supt Ashari adding that the case was being investigated under Section 392 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum jail term of 14 years and a fine or whipping.

He advised the public to be careful and more aware so as to avoid being the victim of crime.
