QuickCheck: Did KL police force a rogue drone to land during the National Day parade?


CROWDS of people gathered in Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday (Aug 31) to celebrate National Day and the police were well prepared to deal with any security issue that might have cropped up.

They were also prepared to deal with issues of a more aerial nature and forced an errant drone flying over the festivities to land. Is this true?

Verdict:

TRUE

The police brought down a drone that was flying illegally over Dataran Merdeka during the National Day 2022 celebrations.

Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Noor Dellhan Yahaya confirmed this when contacted.

"One drone was made to do a forced landing by the police during the National Day celebrations at Dataran Merdeka.

"This is one of the safety duties for the celebrations by Kuala Lumpur police and was assisted by the Police Air Wing," he said.

Prior the public to avoid flying drones over the celebrations without first getting approval from the authorities.

CAAM posted on its official Facebook page on Sunday (Aug 28) stating that it was also to avoid any untoward incident that would involve public safety or increase the risk of accidents involving Royal Malaysian Air Force aircraft flying in low formation in the area.

"Please be reminded that all drone activities in the country are subject to Section 4 of the Civil Aviation Act 1969 (Act 3), Regulation 98, 140 to 144 of the Malaysian Civil Aviation Regulations 2016 and the Civil Aviation Directives (CADs)," CAAM said.
