QuickCheck: Did a bag of two chickens from Malaysia go on sale in Singapore for RM230?

SOCIAL MEDIA users in Singapore were aghast to learn that a packet of two chicken carcasses imported from Malaysia went on sale at a supermarket chain outlet for the princely sum of S$72.27 (RM230) or RM115 per bird.

Did the chickens really go on sale at that price?

Verdict

TRUE

A Malaysian ban on the exports of chicken due to local supply issues came into effect on June 1, heavily impacting Singapore, which relies on its northern neighbour for part of its poultry supply.

A day before the ban kicked in on June 1, a photo of the bag of "SB Whole Chicken" with the FairPrice label began circulating online, the Straits Times reported.

The photo shows that the birds were packed on May 31, and cost S$22.50 (RM72) per kg, compared to the norm of about S$4 (RM13) to S$5 (RM16) per kg.

In response to the issue, NTUC FairPrice said in a Facebook post that the packet – containing two chickens – was correctly labelled.

"The image of the product label is of an organic kampung chicken sold at one of our concessionaire counters operated by Swiss Butchery. This product is priced at S$22.50/kg (per the label's packed date on May 31, 2022), and the product label also showed the product weight of over 3kg as two whole birds were packed together, weighed and priced under the same label.

"We hope this helps to dispel any possible misunderstanding this image may have caused," FairPrice said in the post.
