QuickCheck: Did a large group of students fight in Sandakan?

A VIDEO has gone viral on social media showing a large group of school students fighting in the streets of Sandakan.

Did this really happen?

In the 22-second clip shared by Malay news portal Majoriti.com.my, the students dressed in school uniform can be seen trading blows with each other. Several men are seen shouting at them in an attempt to stop the fight.

Sandakan OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Fuad Abdul Malek said in a statement that 21 students, aged from 14 to 18, have been arrested in connection with the brawl.

The students were picked up from three different schools on Wednesday (May 25), he said, adding that a former student was also detained to aid in the police probe.

ACP Abdul Fuad said initial investigations found that the fight started following a misunderstanding between the boys on Jalan Elopura, Bandar Sandakan.

The students were apparently bad mouthing each other's schools before the argument turned physical.

"We will complete our investigation paper which will then be submitted to the Attorney General's office for further action," ACP Abdul Fuad said.
