MANILA: The Philippines reported on Monday (April 13) 284 new infections from the Covid-19, bringing the total number of the cases in the country to 4,932.

The Department of Health (DOH) also reported in its daily bulletin that 18 more Covid-19 patients have died, bringing the death toll from the virus to 315.

Forty-five more patients have recovered from the disease, the highest recorded so far, bringing the total recoveries to 242.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said in a nationally televised media briefing that the DOH will start on Tuesday an expanded and targeted mass testing for the disease.

Vergeire said that patients with severe or critical symptoms and healthcare workers will be the priority, adding they have the greatest need for testing.

Next in line will be those who have mild symptoms with a relevant history of exposure or considered vulnerable, followed by those who are asymptomatic but have relevant exposure history, she added.

She warned that the expanded testing will result in the surge of Covid-19 cases in the country.

"This is going to be progressive," she added.

Vergeire said the Philippines now has 75 designated Covid-19 referral hospitals that can accommodate 3,194 patents.

"We also have temporary treatment and monitoring facilities with 4,413-bed capacity," she added.

These facilities include two passenger vessels converted into temporary quarantine sites that can accommodate 1,100 overseas Filipino workers and returning seafarers affected by the disease.

In a separate televised briefing, Karlo Nograles, spokesperson for the inter-agency task force for the management of the COVID-19, said the Philippines "is now in a better position" to reach its target 3,000 tests per day.

He added that the Philippines aims to conduct up to 10,000 tests per day. - Xinhua/Asian News Network
