Philippine leader calls for emergency powers amid month-long lockdown

MANILA: Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has asked Congress for emergency powers amid a month-long lockdown aimed at thwarting the spread of the coronavirus disease, as the number of cases rose to 380 in the country, officials said on Sunday (March 22).

In a letter to Senate President Vicente Sotto, Duterte called for a special session of the Senate and the House of Representatives to grant him special powers for a limited period to prevent or minimize the further spread of Covid-19 in the country.
