Sri Lanka approves mega programme to provide houses to poor


COLOMBO: Sri Lanka's cabinet has approved a US$46.5mil proposal to construct or repair over 14,000 houses in the island country as part of a national plan to enhance access to housing at the village level, local media reports said here Monday (Jan 13).

The proposal by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Ministry of Urban Development, Water Supply and Housing Facilities envisages providing one deserving family in each of the country's 14,022 local divisions with US$3,317 to either rebuild a house or repair an existing one.
