SYDNEY: The national death toll in Australia's bushfire crisis rose to 14 on Wednesday (Jan 1) as firefighters advancing into towns and roads destroyed by the firestorm discovered more dead bodies.

The Rural Fire Service said bodies discovered on Wednesday bring the death toll from December’s fires in New South Wales alone to seven, but it is expected to rise. At least 176 homes were destroyed in fires in News South Wales on Tuesday amid very hot, windy weather.
