PETALING JAYA: Issuing halal certification has always been the purview of the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) and has never fallen under the management of any other government agency, says Fuziah Salleh.
The Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department in charge of Islamic Affairs said that Jakim's Halal Management Department manages matters pertaining to certification procedures, halal definitions and assurance management systems.
She was dismissed Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob's claim made during a speech at the Himpunan Penyatuan Ummah 2019 on Saturday (Sept 15) as slander and factually wrong.
In a statement on Saturday (Sept 15), she said his actions were "desperate" and "ill-intended to sow seeds of fear among the Malay-Muslims that the New Malaysia government is apparently led by DAP".
"I'm urging him to apologise, retract as well as correct his statement in order to avoid misunderstandings in regards to halal matters in religion, or be prepared to face legal action," said Fuziah.
Ismail, in his speech on Saturday, claimed that the halal logo certification which had come under Jakim was now under the Finance Ministry
"And we all know who runs the Finance Ministry," the Bera MP was quoted as saying.
