The revised Child Protection Law, introduced in 2016, was a warning to potential offenders that the punishment for child rape would be unforgiving: forced chemical castration. It was initiated by President Joko Widodo in response to national outrage over the gang rape and killing of a 14-year-old girl in Bengkulu.
