BEIJING: A Chinese woman was hit by a stray bullet while she and her husband walked their nine-month-old baby in a stroller in a residential area in eastern China, mainland media reports.
Nanjing police believe the round could have hit her by accident after being fired by university students taking rifle shooting training at a firing range nearby at the time, Yangtse Evening Post reported.
Qin Haixia said she felt a sharp pain in her side as if she had been kicked, and then discovered blood seeping from a wound on her waist in the afternoon of September 12, in Nanjing, Jiangsu province.
She was rushed to hospital where doctors operated on her for more than an hour and discovered a bullet in the left side of her waist.
Qin told the newspaper that she was kept in hospital for a month and was not yet fully recovered. She had also been forced to wean her baby following the accident.
Nanjing police said that the incident could have been the result of off-target shooting by students from Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, who were being given outdoor training at a shooting range in the area that day.
The report said the shooting range belonged to a Nanjing university, without specifying which university.
Qin said an official from Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications had visited her and was willing to cover the cost of all of her expenses.
The report said similar accidents have occurred in the neighbourhood several times before.
One resident claimed her car window was hit by a stray bullet.
The Jiangning district planning department in Nanjing said that it had been unaware of there being a shooting range nearby when developing the residential area.
Some concerned residents had asked city officials to shut down the shooting range as soon as possible, but there had been no progress so far, the report said. – The South China Morning Post.
