SINGAPORE: The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) here said it will probe the death of a cat after it was allegedly hurled from an HDB block in Redhill on Saturday.

The cat, which was found close to death at the foot of Block 89, Redhill Close, at around noon, had a broken leg and shattered mouth, according to a Facebook post by user Fariq Sani.

In response to media queries on Monday, a spokesman said: "AVA is aware of the case and will be investigating."

Speaking to The Straits Times, Fariq said he suspected the cat had been thrown from a substantial height due to the nature of its injuries.

The 43-year-old, who is self-employed, shared that he and his family were making a delivery to one of the units at the block when his wife heard a loud thud.

"We spotted the body on the way down and decided to call the police and SPCA," he added.

Dr Jaipal Singh Gill, acting executive director for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), said the cat had already died when its rescue officer arrived at the scene.

"No witnesses have stepped forward so far, and our inspector has been liaising with AVA on the case," he added.

Dr Gill also revealed that the SPCA would be putting up appeal posters in the vicinity in a bid to determine the cause of the cat's injuries. A Facebook post appealing for information was also uploaded on Monday afternoon.

Several cases of cat deaths were reported in recent months.

Last week, a 41-year-old unemployed man was sentenced to 18 months of probation for throwing a cat over the 13th-floor parapet of his block in Yishun Ring Road.
