JAKARTA: The World Health Organisation said yesterday it had detected a case of the crippling polio virus in Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous country, indicating that an outbreak rooted in Africa had leapt across the Indian Ocean.
The case, affecting a 20-month-old girl on Java, was the first polio infection in Indonesia for nine years, according to Bardan Rana, a medical officer with the UN organisation.
