BANGKOK: A Singaporean teacher was arrested in Bangkok on Friday after he allegedly tried to buy sex with underage boys over the Internet.
Darwis Rianto Lim, 31, was caught at a Bangkok hotel by undercover police officers from Thailand's Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), who posed as sex agents.
Thai police mounted the sting operation after tip-offs from United States and Australian Interpol officers, who had monitored the teacher's attempts to buy sex with Thai boys over the Internet.
According to The Bangkok Post newspaper, the science teacher arrived in Bangkok on Sunday, then allegedly posted notices on the Internet offering S$329 (RM757) for sex with a boy aged between 12 and 16.
On Monday, he was shown three boys at the hotel and allegedly picked a 16-year-old.
The undercover officers arrested him when he paid them the money.
Central Investigation Bureau Commissioner Lt-Gen Thanee Somboonsap told Thai newspaper The Nation that the man faces five years in jail if found guilty of buying sex with a minor.
The Singapore Embassy in Thailand confirmed that Lim had called them for help on Sunday night. The Straits Times/ANN
