BANGKOK: Areas of south-western Thailand swamped during the Indian Ocean tsunami are now suffering shortages of freshwater, and drought is making it difficult to find alternative sources, officials said yesterday.
The main cause of the problem is contamination of traditional freshwater sources, such as wells and ponds, by the saltwater swept inland by the giant waves on Dec 26.
