TAINAN (Taiwan): Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian yesterday called for conciliatory talks with rival China while pledging to defend the island from any mainland invasion.
“They are A-bian's (Chen's nickname) aspirations that through dialogues, the two sides of the Taiwan Strait could lead to co-existence and prosperity,” Chen said while inspecting the Tainan air base in southern Taiwan.
